The new European Ecodesign directive came into effect as of 13.04.2009, and is
concerned with an action of implementation known as the “2005/32/EC Energy
Using Products Directive” (EuP) ecodesign directive. It specifies energy efficiency
requirements for lamps, ballasts and luminaries for applications in the service
sector (offices, industry and road lighting). The 2000/55/EG directive (Energy
Classification of Ballasts and Fluorescent Lamps) will be declared invalid as this
new directive comes into effect.

With this directive, demands for energy efficiency will be determined that will lead
to 2020 to energy savings of approx. 38 TWh and a reduction of carbon
dioxide emissions of more than 15 million tons yearly. Inefficient lamps and
luminaries will be removed from the market step-by-step.

With three implementation steps (2010 –> 2012 –> 2017), manufacturers are given
the chance to modify their production according to efficient alternatives.
Operators of lighting systems should plan in time for alternative products with
regard to light sources that will no longer be permissible in the future, e.g. mercury
vapour halogen lamps found in many street luminaries and T8/T12 fluorescent
lamps with electromagnetic start system. Mission Environmental Ltd is glad to
answer all queries concerning energy-efficient technologies and products.
